Routers, Modems, and Reasonably Priced Compatibility

Most routers are compatible with the majority of modems, but there are key differences that may prevent you from connecting with certain models. Before you can understand which modems work with which routers, take a look at our in-depth guide to router compatibility and how they work.

How do routers work?

Routers create a network of computers and the modem connects that network to the internet. Using Wi-Fi, computers can connect to the router and forward traffic. While many internet providers offer a combined modem and router unit, there are prevalent differences to be aware of. Your decision comes down to preference and budget.

Most routers contain built-in switches, allowing you to connect to multiple devices. By connecting them, you enable these devices to communicate with each other and appear as if the online traffic is coming from a single source. However, you can’t connect to the internet with simply a router. You will also need a modem to transmit the traffic.

Connecting Routers to Modem

A modem is a bridge between your local network and the web. Short for “modulator-demodulator,” modems are used to module signals and encode digital information in order to transmit it to the receiving end. To connect your router to a modem and gain access to the internet, the modem must work with your internet service provider’s infrastructure.

This is the key component of router compatibility. The modem doesn’t have to be from the same internet provider, but it does need to be compatible.

Combined Router & Modem

Another option is to go for the combined router and modem unit. A router/modem unit has both router functions and modem functions, all included in one device. Typically, this combo unit works best for basic users, since they don’t necessarily need the added features of each sole system. If your business begins to delve into more advanced networking, a stronger modem and router may be required.

What if my router is incompatible?

Reach out to your internet service provider to switch out a rented router. If you purchased your router, you will unfortunately need to buy another. While it may be a hassle, proper router connectivity is essential to running your business.

It is important to do your research and look for the setup that is compatible with your internet service provider, enabling you to achieve router compatibility.
